NORTH CHARLESTON— Police arrested a man in connection with a pedestrian hit-and-run that occurred in the early morning hours of Aug. 2.

Officers responded to the intersection of Leeds Avenue and Dorchester Road around 1 a.m. after a report of a pedestrian hit by a car.

The victim was identified as 63-year-old Silas Williams Jr., of Johns Island, on Aug. 12by Charleston County coroner Brittney Martin.

He was initially transported to the Medical University of South Carolina in critical condition but later succumbed from injuries sustained in the collisionon Aug. 9, Martin said.

Police used surveillance cameras to get the license plate number of the suspect's vehicle before locating and arresting 27-year-old Mario Gene Williams on a charge of hit-and-run resulting in great bodily injury, the incident report said.

Williams was released from the Al Cannon Detention Centeron Aug. 2 on a$40,000 bond, according to public Charleston County Sheriff's Department inmate records.

As of Aug. 16, the charges against Mario Williams were upgraded tohit and run accident with death, said North Charleston Police Department spokesperson Harve Jacobs.

Williams turned himself in to police after the charges were amended, said Jacobs. He posted another$40,000 bond and released on Aug. 18, according to inmate records.
